### Lesson Outline:
#### 1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Greet students and briefly discuss what a civilization is.
- Introduce the four early river valley civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and Ancient China.
- Show a world map and point out where each civilization was located.
- Explain the importance of rivers to these civilizations (e.g., water source for agriculture, transportation, trade).
#### 2. Direct Instruction (20 minutes)
- Use the textbook or handout to provide a brief overview of each civilization:
- **Mesopotamia**: Located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Contributions: Writing (cuneiform), the wheel, and early city-states.
- **Egypt**: Located along the Nile river. Contributions: Pyramids, hieroglyphics, and advanced agricultural practices.
- **Indus Valley**: Located along the Indus river. Contributions: Urban planning, advanced drainage systems, and trade with Mesopotamia.
- **Ancient China**: Located along the Yellow river (Huang He). Contributions: Early writing scripts, bronze casting, and the development of silk.

- Divide students into four groups and assign each group one of the civilizations.
- Give each group chart paper and markers.
- Instruct each group to create a poster that includes:
- The name of their assigned civilization
- The river(s) important to that civilization
- At least three key characteristics or contributions
- Drawings or decorations related to that civilization
- Circulate among the groups to facilitate discussion and provide guidance.
#### 4. Presentation (10 minutes)
- Allow each group a few minutes to present their poster to the class.
- Encourage other students to ask questions and give positive feedback.
#### 5. Independent Activity (5 minutes)
- Distribute an activity sheet where students can draw and label the four early river valley civilizations on a map.
- Include a matching section where students match each civilization to its key contributions.
#### 6. Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Recap the key points of the lesson, asking students to share one interesting fact they learned.
- Answer any remaining questions the students may have.
